Plot Summary:

WARNING: CONTAINS MILD SPOILERS!
We Were Liars is a modern, sophisticated suspense novel by E. Lockhart.
The story is told from the perspective of Cadence, a teenage girl from a wealthy family. Every summer her family go to their private island, Beechwood. There the adults drink wine, eat lavish foods and fight over their inheritances while the children play on the beach, and get into all sorts of trouble. But one summer, something big happens and Cadence can’t remember. All she knows is that she was found on the beach, sopping wet and injured and that she now has debilitating chronic migraines. The story follows Cadence as she sets out to discover the truth about what happened that summer. We Were Liars is a haunting tale of friendship and love, truth and lies.

My thoughts:

I'm struggling to review this book without giving too much away. We Were Liars has been hyped up quite a lot and I am probably one of the last people to read it. That being said I did manage to avoid any spoilers or finding out anything about this book before I read it. If you are to read this book I feel you need to go into it as 'blind' as you can. Don't let anyone spoil it for you! The less you know about the story, the more you will be affected.
The writing style is beautifully poetic and almost lyrical in places which give the story dimension. We Were Liars is unlike anything I have read before. I found the pace at the beginning to be slightly slow therefore it took me a while to get into the story. I think this was also down to the fact that at the beginning I also found it difficult to relate to Cadence. However, after a few chapters I couldn't put it down, I just needed to know what was going to happen next!
Without giving too much away, the ending of this one I did not see coming. I can normally spot twists early on, however, I did not have this one figured out. After finishing the book it took me a while to process what had happened and I had to go back and read certain parts again.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and it is one of my favourites this year.

Would I recommend this book?

In short, yes! We Were Liars is not a book for everyone. But it’s definitely a book for me. I hope I haven't given too much away. If you're thinking of reading this book then go and pick it up. I promise you won't be disappointed!
